NATIONAL FLAG ADOPTION DAY
Introduction :- India celebrates National Flag Adoption Day on 22nd July every year to commemorate the adoption of its national flag; the Tricolor in its present form. The Indian national flag was adopted in its present form by the Constituent Assembly on 22nd July 1947; hardly a month before India gained independence on 15th August 1947.
Evolution and Adoption of the National Flag :- India under the British Rule had seen hundreds of flags representing various princely states spread across its length and breadth. British rulers of India came up with their own flags after the great revolt of 1857. There were flags for different purposes and also for different princely states. But, all the flags had large British influence, representing the crown in some way or the other. The British administrators even dictated the flags of various princely states.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Indian national movement gained momentum and the idea of a single flag to represent India’s freedom struggle was conceived by many freedom fighters and political figures. Thus the Swaraj Flag was evolved that represented India’s struggle for complete independence against the British. The Swaraj flag underwent several changes and finally, the Tricolor as we know today was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22nd July 1947. It was designed by Pingali Venkayya and was to continue as the flag of the Republic of India after 26th January 1950.
